Effects of the spermatozoa: oocyte ratio, water volume and water temperature on artificial fertilization and sperm activation of cascudo-preto R. Bras. Zootec.
Bombardelli,Robie Allan; Sanches,Eduardo Antônio; Baggio,Diego Mendes; Sykora,Renata Marino; Souza,Bruno Estevão de; Tessaro,Lucélia; Piana,Pitágoras Augusto.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of water volume and water temperature on the sperm motility duration and the number of spermatozoa, and the water volume on the fertilization rates of oocytes of Rhinelepis aspera. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of semen dilutions (1.74×10-5, 1.74×10-4, 1.74×10-3, 1.74×10-2, 1.74×10-1 and 1.00 mL of sperm.mL-1 of water) and water temperature (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 ºC) on spermatozoa motility duration. In addition, the effects of insemination dose (7×10³, 7×10(4), 7×10(5), 7×10(6) and 7×10(7) spermatozoa.oocyte-1) and water volume (1.0, 30.0, 60.0, 90.0 and 120.0 mL water.2.0 mL-1 oocytes) on the artificial fertilization rates of oocytes were evaluated. The...

Effets directs et indirects de la pêche sur des groupes trophiques de poissons démersaux, définis par une approche écomorphologique ArchiMer
Reecht, Yves.
Functional groups dynamics in marine communities help understanding how perturbations impact the functioning of an ecosystem. It is notably expected that functional groups respond differently to fishing pressure owing to their direct exposure to fishing and interactions between groups (indirect effects). A method was developed, based on an ecomorphological approach focusing on predation functions, to define size- and taxonomy-driven functional groups in demersal fish communities from the Celtic Sea and the North Sea. Eleven functional traits were used to define 12 functional groups in Celtic Sea (based on measurements on 930 individuals from 33 species) and seven groups in North Sea (710 individuals from 22 species). In the Celtic Sea, the functional...

Effluents from land based marine farms: nature, treatment, valorisation, modelisation. Applications to fish and shrimp rearing ArchiMer
Hussenot, Jerome; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Martin, Jean-louis.
Fish culture (seabass, turbot...) on the French metropolitan coast, and shrimp culture in the overseas territories (essentially New Caledonia and Tahiti) are subject to a regular development through land based farms. Three thematic of research on aquaculture ponds are carried out in CREMA-L’Houmeau, in collaboration with producers. The aim of the first one is to determine the optimal rearing conditions (stocking density, water renewal rate, input of oxygen, rate of feeding...) which allow to minimise the quantity of wastes for a similar final biomass. The second part aims to reduce the nutrient loading in the effluent, through open-air treatments: sedimentation ponds, foam fractionation, mass production of phytoplankton, and rearing of molluscs on the...

Electrolocation-communication discharges of the fish Gymnotus carapo L. (Gymnotidae: Gymnotiformes) during behavioral sleep BJMBR
Stopa,R.M.; Hoshino,K..
Technical problems have hampered the study of sleep in teleosts. The electrical discharges of Gymnotus carapo L. (Gymnotidae: Gymnotiformes) were monitored to evaluate their ease and reliability as parameters to study sleep. The discharges were detected by electrodes immersed in a glass aquarium and were recorded on a conventional polygraph. G. carapo showed conspicuous signs of behavioral sleep. During these periods, opercular beat rates were counted, electric discharges recorded, and the "sharp discharge increase" (SDI) of the orienting reflex was investigated. All 20 animals monitored maintained electrical discharges during behavioral sleep. The discharge frequencies during sleep (50.3 ± 10.4 Hz) were not significantly different from those observed when...

Electronic individual identification of zebrafish using radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags ArchiMer
Cousin, Xavier; Daouk, Tarek; Pean, Samuel; Lyphout, Laura; Schwartz, Marie-elise; Begout, Marie-laure.
Although individual electronic tagging using passive integrated acoustic (PIT) tags is established, it is mainly for fish >60. mm in length and is unsuitable for fish of <30. mm, like zebrafish. We used radio frequency identification (RFID) microtags (1 mm in diameter and 6 mm in length, with a mass of similar to 10 mg) to individually identify juvenile zebrafish (length 16-42 mm, mass 138-776 mg) for the first time, and studied the effects of intracoelomic implantation on fish survival and microtag loss, growth, spawning and exploratory behaviour. After 5.5 months, both high survival (82%) and low microtag loss (11%) were achieved. The smallest surviving fish weighed 178 mg, and success in microtag reading was 73% for the size class 350-450 mg (26...

Embryonic Development of Bryconamericus caucanus (Characidae: Tetragonpterinae) under Laboratory Conditions International Journal of Morphology
Montoya,Andrés; Arias,Mauricio; Olivera-Angel,Martha.
In this study we describe the early stages of development of Bryconamericus caucanus under laboratory conditions. Mature females (mean weight 8.12 g) received two intraperitoneal doses of Carp Pituitary Extract (1st dose of 0.5 mg / kg at time 0 and 2nd dose of 5 mg / kg 12 h later), and mature males received a single dose of 0.5 mg / kg at the time of the 2nd dose to the females. Extrusion of eggs was performed at 152.25 Accumulated Thermal Units. Eggs of B. caucanus were yellow, round shaped, non-adhesive, and the perivitelline space after hydratation was moderate. Hatching occurred 28 h 20 min after fertilization (21C, 594.3 Accumulated Thermal Units). The morphological features of the egg and early embryo of B. caucanus were similar to previous reports...

Endogenous regulation of 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) and corticosteroid receptors (CRs) during rainbow trout early development and the effects of corticosteroids on hatching. ArchiMer
Kiilerich, Pia; Geffroy, Benjamin; Valotaire, Claudiane; Prunet, Patrick.
Clear evidence for a physiological role of the mineralocorticoid-like hormone 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) in fish is still lacking. Efforts to demonstrate an osmoregulatory role for this hormone has so far not been conclusive, while a few scattered studies have indicated a role for DOC in development and reproduction. In this study, we investigate the onset of de novo DOC synthesis in parallel with endogenous corticosteroid receptor mRNA production from fertilization to the swim-up stage in rainbow trout. Whole egg DOC content decreased from fertilization until hatching followed by an increase to pre-fertilization levels just after hatching. Onset of de novo transcription of corticosteroid receptor mRNA’s was...

Environment and immunomodulation : effects of the soluble fraction of Norwegian heavy fuel on the immune system of Sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Bado-nilles, Anne; Quentin, Claire; Le Floch, Stéphane; Arzel, Jacqueline; Auffret, Michel; Gagnaire, Beatrice; Renault, Tristan; Thomas-guyon, Hélène.
Estuaries and coastal areas are often subjected to much pollution, including pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produced by anthropic activities. Bay of Marennes-Oléron is an estuarine coastal zone in which there is a high level of aquacultural production and this has adverse effects in aquatic organisms. In fact, PAHs, which are widely spread throughout aquatic ecosystems, have a low polarity and so there is a clear tendency to bioaccumulate in marine organisms (1). The harmful effects of such contaminants on the organism's immune system, leading to a decreased resistance to pathogens, is a relatively new area of research and it still poorly understood. The aim of the present work was to detect the impact in vivo of PAHs on the immune...

Environmental color affects Nile tilapia reproduction BJMBR
Volpato,G.L.; Duarte,C.R.A.; Luchiari,A.C..
We investigated the effects of environmental color on the reproductive behavior of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Two environmental colors were tested by covering the aquarium (60 x 60 x 40 cm) with white (12 groups) or blue (13 groups) cellophane and observing reproductive behavior in groups of 2 males (10.27 ± 0.45 cm) and 3 females (10.78 ± 0.45 cm) each. After assignment to the respective environmental color (similar luminosity = 100 to 120 Lux), the animals were observed until reproduction (identified by eggs in the female's mouth) or up to 10 days after the first nest building. Photoperiod was from 6:00 h to 18:00 h every day. Food was offered in excess once a day and water quality was similar among aquaria. Daily observations were made at...

Functional groups are sets of species that play a similar role in a food web. We defined functional groups of fish species based on their morphological characteristics, while using expert knowledge for invertebrates. We measured 9 morphological traits of 72 fish species, and carried out multivariate analyses to assign fish species to functional groups. The analysis identified 9 trait-based fish functional groups to which were added 3 expert-based invertebrate functional groups. The habitat (position in the water column) and potential diet of each group were identified from the literature. Using the MEDITS bottom trawl survey data collected at 10 to 800 m depth, we calculated relative change in the 12 fish and invertebrate functional group biomasses for 12...

Epithelial sentinels or protozoan parasites?: Studies on isolated rodlet cells on the 100th anniversary of an enigma RChHN
SCHMACHTENBERG,OLIVER.
Rodlet cells are an unusual cell type found exclusively in teleost fishes. Their principal characteristics are a fibrous capsule and arrow or club-like structures pointing towards the apex of the cell, which are called rodlets. Rodlet cells were first described by Thelohan (1892) as undetermined sporozoan fish parasites, and soon after named Rhabdospora thelohani by Laguesse (1895). In 1906, a presently ongoing controversy started, with Plehn's independent characterization of rodlet cells as endogenous glandular cells, and a prompt refutation by Laguesse (1906). Both maintained their position, and during the following century both views continued to coexist with varying popularity, while additional interpretations of rodlet cell function were proposed....

Estimates of genetic variability and inbreeding in experimentally selected populations of European sea bass ArchiMer
Hillen, J. E. J.; Coscia, I.; Vandeputte, Marc; Herten, K.; Hellemans, B.; Maroso, F.; Vergnet, Alain; Allal, Francois; Maes, G. E.; Volckaert, F. A. M..
The aquaculture industry has increasingly aimed at improving economically important traits like growth, feed efficiency and resistance to infections. Artificial selection represents an important window of opportunity to significantly improve production. However, the pitfall is that selection will reduce genetic diversity and increase inbreeding in the farmed stocks. Genetic tools are very useful in this context as they provide accurate measures of genetic diversity together with many additional insights in the stock status and the selection process. In this study we assessed the level of genetic variability and relatedness over several generations of two lines of experimentally selected European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.). The first line was...

Estimating effective population size of large marine populations, is it feasible? ArchiMer
Marandel, Florianne; Lorance, Pascal; Berthele, Olivier; Trenkel, Verena; Waples, Robin S.; Lamy, Jean-baptiste.
stainable exploitation of marine populations is a challenging task relying on information about their current and past abundance. Fisheries‐related data can be scarce and unreliable making them unsuitable for quantitative modelling. One fishery independent method that has attracted attention in this context consists in estimating the effective population size (Ne), a concept founded in population genetics. We reviewed recent empirical studies on Ne and carried out a simulation study to evaluate the feasibility of estimating Ne in large fish populations with the currently available methods. The detailed review of 26 studies found that published empirical Ne values were very similar despite differences in species and total population sizes (N). Genetic...

Estimating size at first maturity (L50) from Gonadossomatic Index (GSI) data Neotropical Ichthyology
Fontoura,Nelson F.; Braun,Aloísio S.; Milani,Paulo Cesar C..
Correct estimates of size at first maturity (L50) are useful for fish stock management and different methods have been proposed. In this study we propose the use of a modified logistic to estimate L50, including a variable asymptote (A). We also test the use of the Gonadossomatic Index (GSI) as a flag to establish the reproductive status of each female fish. The method is demonstrated using GSI data for four Neotropical fish species: Characiformes: Astyanax fasciatus (n = 473) and Oligosarcus robustus (n = 297); Siluriformes: Loricariichthys anus (n = 427) and Trachelyopterus lucenai (n = 195). The results were stable enough to propose this method be used for other fish species with different life histories and with a relatively unconstrained sampling...

Estimation of genetic parameters of feed conversion ratio based on individual phenotypes and genomic data in sea bass ArchiMer
Besson, Mathieu; Allal, Francois; Chatain, Beatrice; Vergnet, Alain; Clota, Frederic; Ferrari, Sebastien; Vandeputte, Marc.
We estimated genetic parameters of feed conversion ratio (FCR) and daily growth coefficient (DGC) using individual phenotypes measured in aquariums under a restricted feeding regime and genomic information on 2,722 SNP markers. The results showed a moderate heritability of both traits (0.26 for FCR and 0.41 for DGC) as well as close to unity negative genetic correlation between them. Thus, FCR of fish in aquariums could be improved by selecting fish for higher DGC. Nevertheless, these results must be taken with caution until we know whether individual FCR measured in aquariums also reflects the FCR of fish reared in groups.
